How To Start An Online Store

Welcome!

My name is James and I created this informational website to share some of what I've learned about starting online stores. My hope is that my site helps aspiring entrepreneurs to get started online affordably, quickly, and effectively.

The focus here is to cover all of the basics, and some of the advanced aspects, of starting an online store. There really is so much more to it than just the actual site construction aspects. So, I also cover several other things that you should consider, including: a) advice on selecting products for your online store, b) thinking of and registering a good, effective domain name that is beneficial to your efforts to sell online, and c) identifying the right internet company to host your store on the web.

There is a lot to do if you want to start your online store the right way. But, I assure you that it is all very doable for the average person who is willing to learn and try.

Setting-up an online store is both satisfying and liberating because you can successfully do it yourself and be running your own business pretty quickly. Like many others, I decided to start selling products online because I wanted to be in business for myself but couldn't afford the expenses associated with establishing a traditional "brick-and-mortar" store. Paying rent for retail shop space and bearing the cost of utilities, furnishings, enough product to stock-up a store, and the various other countless expenses was completely out of the question. I simply did not have the budget necessary to do all of that.

I knew that starting an online store was my best venue for creating a business. But, I couldn't afford to retain a professional web programmer to build my site for me. I did, however, have a few things going for me... 1) I was willing to research, read, and carefully study about setting-up an online store, 2) I was relatively computer literate, and 3) I was highly motivated.

Fortunately, I found that there are some inexpensive (and sometimes free), very powerful and easy to use website building tools available for a novice wanting to start an online store. The tools and products I discuss here primarily come from Yahoo, GoDaddy, Google, Microsoft, and Adobe.

There are obviously many ways of creating a website that sells things. But, because I had no experience when I first ventured into this, I stuck with tools from the very large companies that I listed. The idea was that those companies would have the most robust, user-friendly website development tools and that they would also offer decent customer support. I have never regretted that thought process and decision. In fact, I'm still amazed at what a non-programmer can design and build on their own. Regular people can get a web-based store up and running on their own and have it look and feel like a professionally built website.

My guess is that after you read on and discover how you can in fact accomplish all of this on your own, and with very little expense, you will possibly end up starting more than one online store.
